Before my time on the “Outstanding Newsroom Performers” wall is up, I thought I’d better get this posted. Winning the newsroom award for the month of March was certainly a shock and an exciting way to kick off the summer at The Sun!
From the announcement:
Our newsroom award winner for the month of March is Technology and Design Manager Nick Tann.
In March, Nick worked hard to design and produce an innovative new photo and video blog for baltimoresun.com called The Darkroom. The Darkroom highlights visual journalism and showcases the work of our staff photographers and videographers.
The Darkroom represents an exciting new visual direction for baltimoresun.com, providing the ability to display photos and slideshows in a dynamic and immersive environment. The site creates a true “experience” for viewers by employing an engaging and modern design aesthetic that places direct emphasis on the showcased multimedia.
In addition to a compelling design, Nick employed advanced web design techniques to provide users with multiple ways to view galleries– including a full-screen option– and seamless integration of social media hooks such as Facebook commenting. In addition, Nick should be commended on his dedication to developing a product that fully delivers regardless of device. The Darkroom provides an excellent experience for mobile and tablet browsing and is the first large-scale responsive design project that we have completed at The Baltimore Sun.
The site, which soft-launched the last week in March, generated enthusiastic comments and compliments from users.
It should be noted that while creating The Darkroom, Nick also assisted with daily print graphics assignments and produced the Protecting Maryland Pets database.
Nick was chosen by a team of senior editors, who considered nominations from throughout the newsroom.
